Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - State officials say routine sampling has led to the discovery of a deer infected with Chronic Wasting Disease in Winona County.

The three-year-old white-tailed buck is part of a farm herd that has been quarantined by the US Department of Agriculture. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health noted the herd has been under CWD surveillance, with regular testing, for about a decade. Investigators are now working to track the movements of deer into an out of the herd in an effort to identify other potentially infected herds.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is engaged in an intensive CWD surveillance effort in neighboring Fillmore County, where 11 infected deer were found in the wild deer herd in the Preston area during the 2016 hunting season. Since the start of the firearm deer hunting season this fall, preliminary test results have identified seven other deer harvested by hunters that are likely infected by the fatal brain disorder.
