The Mabel-Canton Cougars girls basketball team got the road win on Friday night, 61-43 over the Rushford-Peterson Trojans, as heard on KFIL.

Friday night's game started as a very close contest, and both sides played hard all night. Hustle was the name of the game, with various players on both teams ending up on the court fighting for rebounds and loose balls. The home Trojans had a 14-11 lead before the visiting Cougars rolled off a 10-0 run. Basketball being a game of runs, Rushford-Peterson answered with a 10-2 run to take the lead back for a moment. The Cougars then ended the first half on a run. M-C forced a turnover with 11 seconds and set up for the final possession of the half. The shot was no good, but the Cougars took advantage of offensive rebounds, and Courtney Graves just got the shot off before the halftime buzzer to give her team the 28-24 lead at the break.

As in the first half, there was some early foul trouble for the visitors in the second half, but M-C quickly took a 40-30 lead and did not look back. There were no more huge runs the rest of the game, but the Cougars took advantage of open looks to extend their lead and get the win 61-43. Though M-C turned the ball over more than R-P in the second half, they out-rebounded the Trojans by 10 and the Lady Cougars shot 13-21 from the floor in the second half as well.

Leading the way for the Trojans were Brianna Koop, with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Savannah Skalet led with 16 points.

On the Cougars side, Coranda Vickerman led everybody with 23 points and 13 rebounds, Courtney Graves had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards, and Payton Danielson scored 8 second-half points to get up to 10 points as well.

The Lady Cougars move to 2-1 this season, while R-P falls to 3-2. We will have more girls high school basketball for you  next Friday as Mabel-Canton travels to Lanesboro. Boys basketball broadcast on Tuesday is Fillmore Central hosting LeRoy-Ostrander. We hope you can join us!
