Last night, KFIL broadcasted the Southeast Conference boy's basketball game between Mabel-Canton and Lanesboro. It was the second meeting of the year between the rivals, with MC scoring a 51-48 win in the first round. It was almost like a foreshadowing. The Cougars sprinted out to a 9-0 lead, forcing the Burros to take time out four and a half minutes in. After staking the Cougars to an 11-point lead, the Burros finally started dropping shots shaving the lead to two. MC bounced back and led by eight at the break, 30-22. The second half started fast for the Cougars as well, as they began with a 10-2 run to go up by 16 at 40 to 24 just over four minutes in. The Burros were again up to the task, chipping away at the lead. The Cougars didn't help their cause, with turnovers and missed free throws, feeding the Burro comeback. Lanesboro's Carson Schwichtenberg, a freshman, nailed a corner three with 40 seconds left to give the Burros the lead at 48-47. It would be the only lead Lanesboro had. The Cougars ran time down, until Wayne Ross found a wide open Tannor Fairchild underneath for the answering bucket and a 49-48 lead with 10 seconds to go. Lanesboro's leading scorer, Cole Schwichtenberg rushed the ball up the court, when Ross picked his pocket and streaked to the other end with a second to go to lay it up and finalize a 51-48 victory for the Cougars again. Great comeback by the Burros- lots of fun!

The “Player of the Game” awards went to Collin Scott of the Burros, who led with 18 points, 4 steals, and 3 blocked shots, and Wayne Ross of the Cougars. In addition to the huge plays in the final minute, Wayne led MC with 15 points and a game-high 5 steals.

The “Game Ball” was awarded to Bryce Michels of MC. Bryce, a senior, had numerous drives and scores in the lane, scoring 11- eight above his three points-per-game average.

We're off for the snowstorm thankfully! Next up, a top-ten battle in boy's basketball Thursday with #2 Spring Grove visiting #6 Rushford-Peterson. 7:15 pregame.
