Carrie Underwood's 2016 CMA Awards performance of "Dirty Laundry" was a total girl-power moment. The singer was flanked by an all-female band full of rising country music singers and musicians.

It's possible you recognized a few of the nine women Underwood performed with. Stoney Creek Records artist and "By the Way" singer Lindsay Ell played guitar. "Lipstick" singers Runaway June (Naomi Cooke, Jennifer Wayne, Hannah Mulholland) played instruments and sang along. So did Lindi Ortega, Rachel Loy and drummer Elizabeth Chan. Rock and blues guitarist Orianthi rounded out the group.

Underwood thanked the women on Facebook and Instagram, but her fans were quick to recognize the importance of a female takeover at the CMA Awards. The struggles of women in country music have been well-documented over the last several years, and the 33-year-old superstar has herself reflected on how women work twice as hard for half of the recognition.

“When I go to vote for the Country Music Awards, I have to write in names — I can think of, like, three who are really active,” she told Cosmopolitan of successful female artists in November 2015. "I am one of the lucky ones."

The song "Dirty Laundry" is as much of a strong statement as it is a way to get revenge on a cheating husband or boyfriend. But Underwood tells Taste of Country that she liked that it was a strong and empowering response to being treated poorly. It's Underwood's fourth single from the Storyteller album. In addition to performing, the superstar co-hosted the CMAs with Brad Paisley for a ninth time.
