Big Plays Lead Saints Over Bulldogs On Cool 104

It was a gorgeous night to kick-off our coverage of high school football on Cool 104, and it pitted two teams that have not faced each other since 2012.

St. Charles road the back of three big plays, and a couple of big defensive stops, en route to a 22-6 victory over the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs.

After a couple of turnover on downs to start the game, Parker Wendt broke free for a 49 yard run to take the ball to the 1-yard line. He punched it in on the next carry, and following a two-point conversion St. Charles was up 8-0.

On their next possession, the Bulldogs marched down the field on the legs of Derrick Lockwood and Barron Holtz. The running back and quarterback combo carried the load for the offense, and the Bulldogs got it to the 1-yard line and then used a quick snap to gain edge and secure the touchdown. They failed on the two-point try, making it 8-6.

That was the score at half, and the second half was when the big carries came out.

On 2nd and 10, Sam Holtz got the toss to the short side of the field, turned the corner and ran for a 94-yard touchdown. He followed up with another 45-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter, putting it out of reach of the Bulldogs and solidifying the 22-6 victory.

Both defenses got big stops in the redzone when the opposing offense was about to score, but the Saints were just able to use a couple of big runs to edge out to victory.

Wendt finished with 15 carries for 173 yards and a score, earning the Subway Player of the Game award for St. Charles, while Holtz had 10 carries for 176 yards and two scores to lock down the Kingsley Mercantile Game Ball award.

Lockwood led the way for the Bulldogs, carrying the ball 22 times for 150 yards. Although he didn't find the end zone, he was a great bell-cow of a back to help the Bulldogs offense.

It was a phenomenal game, and a great way to kick-off the 2017 season!
